Dear
Sir/Madam,
Asian Wildlife Consultancy Co. Ltd., (AWC) is an
organization that works internationally to improve
Wildlife Management Standards. It strives to achieve its
mission through a team of specialists not only from the
field of wildlife but also from other fields
like marketing, architecture, accounting, information
technology, etc. It provides a number of services like
consultancy in concept design and development,
conservation breeding programs, animal exchange
programs, animal feeding programs, animal enrichment
programs and many others each complimenting its mission.
SOCIAL MISSION: http://www.asianwildlife.com/social
An important part of AWC’s mission comprises of it’s
social objectives, which are directed not only toward
the benefit of the animals but also towards the benefit
of the society in large. This comprises of
supporting young conservationists and biologists to take
good decisions and grow upto become conservation leaders
of tomorrow. To support their activities the
organization allocates certain amount of grants to
eligible grant seekers. The grants act as a stimulus for
various in-situ and ex-situ conservation activities. To
apply for grant please click http://www.asianwildlife.com/social/guide.htm
OUR PROJECTS: http://www.asianwildlife.com/social/projects.htm
AWC also coordinates a number of conservation breeding
programs to save some threatened animal species from
extinction. Some of these conservation breeding programs
includes:
1. Clouded Leopard Breeding Program
2. Fishing Cat Breeding Program
3. Great Hornbill Breeding Program
4. Pileated Gibbon Project
These programs, once reach success, can make a whole lot
of difference and will help in the re-introduction of a
large population of the species in the wild and will
also prove to be a land mark for further research
studies on the species.
AWC also develops informative and educational research
material on various species. All the social
activities at AWC is transparent and can be monitored
but all contributors through our website. AWC, to
substantiate its mission, has collaborated with a number
of international zoological organizations and this has
helped it successfully accomplish a number of
objectives.

WOLF SHOW |
|
I
was so excited to see the presentation on wolves!
The feature was indeed overdue as the general public
thinks of these beautiful creatures as a threat to
mankind. As a avid fan of Animal Planet and a member of
Defenders of Wildlife (to primarily try to help the wolf
population), I watched with intense interest. On
behalf of these magnificant animals, I believe the show
misrepresented or overlooked some very
significant facts. Wolves do kill only the sick
and elderly elk - not as "capitalists" but
rather as a key part of maintaining the healthy elk
population. Secondly, the wolves only kill for
food and feed themselves and other creatures in
Yellowstone. The carcasses are cleaned not by the
wolves, but rather bald eagles, coyotes, bears, fox and
insects (see Washington Post 2/11/03). Wolves do live in
families and their reintroduction to Yellowstone has
allowed the area to recover from a ecological inbalance.
Trees now grow along the rivers as the elk move inland;
consequently trout, migratory birds, beavers otters,
minks, and muskrats have returned to the marshlands.
The contributions made by these beautiful and truly
remarkable wolves are restoring Yellowstone's natural
habitat.
While they may occasionally stray beyond its boundaries
looking for food, their contributions FAR outweigh any
losses incurred by neighboring farmers. I
sincerely appreciate the opportunity to express these
views and hope that you will take the initiative to
followup on the 2/12 airing to describe the gray wolves'
essential value to the ecosystem in Yellowstone and
other locations. Thank you, Susan |

Does
Jeff Read All This? |
|
Hey-
I
Know I can't compair to Jeff, but I'm in my first year
collage to become a vet, so right now I just deal with
pets.( cats dogs exc.) Before I started school I had
some crazy wildlife encounters of my own.My hubbies
family (who are part ape themselfs) talked me into
living in the hills of Ky.We ended up moving into a 100
year old house that was alive with all kinds of wild
things. The first day we were there we got a cool visiter
a BIG bobcat. We also had a bat that lived in the
attic. He would come down stairs and come right behind
our heads where a light was to get a bug snack.I had to
tie my dog up when we would leave our house so he
wouldn't run off.The first time I did this, when
we came home the dog was very sick.I check him out and
found what looked to be some kinda snake bit.I did all I
knew to treat him, made a place for him in a pin where I
tied him up at before. He got better then got bit
again, this time I found out what kind of snake it was, a
copper head.I got the snake and took him to a zoo that
was kinda close they would not take the snake so we let
him go about 20 miles from the zoo in the
mountains. We keeped seeing them, and for our safty we
had to kill all we seen around our house.(I know you
don't like to hear that, sorry!)I guess when I really
got scard is when I found fresh skin in my bedroom.I
decided that we needed to find somewhere else to
live!!! By the time we moved we killed 22 copper
heads.Thats not including the one that my husband cut
and lots and lots of LIVE babys came out.I guess copper
heads have live young.Do you know?We had the old house
torn down before we sold the land, and under the hole
house was a big din with lots more.I love all animals
but that was just alittle too much for me.Thanks for
taking the time to read this. I hope it didn't put you
to sleep.

Hello
Jeff,
I have a small lizard rescue I run out of my home
currently I house about 30 lizards right now most of
which are about 23 Iguanas, to make a long story short i
love these guys dearly and do whatever it takes to get
them out of bad situations and give them a second chance
they so greatly deserve. I am currently
seeking government grants in hopes to be able to start a
facility to house rescues, foster lizards,
adoption, and education. The interest for owning a
lizard for a pet has grown so much but, unfortunately
the want for the knowledge to take care of them has not,
and I would like like to start something and hopefully
get a ball rolling for the benefit of my scaley little
kids, i'm not asking for money I would just like a
letter stating you agree or disagree with my intentions.
If you disagree all I ask is that you tell me why and
possibly offer some alternative advice.
Thats it in a nutshell
thank you for your time.

From
a real Biologist.... |
|
I
don't know if Jeff Corwin reads this message board or
not -- but I do enjoy from time to time checking
biology-related boards posted by youngsters whom are
interested entering the field.
I noticed no questions have been answered on this board
-- so I thought I would offer a few tips for the future
Biologists on the board:
In answer to some of the questions as to what should one
do as course study to become a Biologist [i.e.,
Herpetology, Zoology, the research of a specific species,
etc.] It all starts with High School. Maintaining
excellent grades to get into the good colleges that
offer specific biology programs is crucial!
I personally started with a Bachelors of Science degree
[double major: zoology/anthropology] Honors is the
fourth year of the degree and focuses on a specific
research project in your area of interest.
Volunteering for research facilities, a zoos, wildlife
rehabs, and biologist circuits really help a lot too in
getting your foot in the door as your nearing the end of
your undergrad education.
Training on average, is about 7 years. 4 years undergrad
[college and/or university] and 3 years postgrad
[Masters program] Then you have another 3-5 years
[depending how well your study goes] to get a PhD.
I know it sounds like a ton of education -- and it is --
but after your undergrad degree, you don't really feel
much like a "student" anymore because you're
doing a lot more research [field/lab/and otherwise]
instead of taking exams.
I am currently working on my PhD., and spending the next
3½ to 4 years studying the behavioral ecology of
predator-prey interactions between snakes and lizards.
Really exciting!
Anyway, I hope this has answered some of the questions
for you all there. Take care and keep on reaching for
your dreams! |
